ARNOLD BAX Sonata for Viola and Piano, GP 251

GABRIELA LENA FRANK Cinco Danzas de Chambi

GEORGE ENESCU Concertpiece

This program is designed to explore artists throughout history and prepares this repertoire to honor the legacy of these artists.

Lionel Tertis, a famous English violist, commissioned Arnold Bax for a viola sonata that was completed in 1922. Among numerous other works Tertis commissioned, this was extremely well received and is still played by violists today. Gabriela Lena Frank’s Cinco Danzas de Chambi honors the legacy of Martín Chambi, a famous Peruvian photographer. Lena Frank presents five movements based on pictures that Chambi collected over his life. George Enescu composed his Concertpiece as a test piece for graduates of the Paris Conservatoire, his alma mater. As I approach the end of my masters degree, I have to consider what I will be leaving behind at my alma maters and for the attending artists.
